Shreyas Iyer achieved a huge Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) record after Punjab Kings walloped Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in Guwahati. Regardless of the latest outcome, both Rajasthan Royals and KKR have been qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

Shreyas Iyer achieves huge KKR feat in IPL 2024

The defeat to Rajasthan Royals at the hands of Punjab Kings ensured that KKR will finish the IPL 2024 league stage at the top of the 10-team points table. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the KKR franchise has already secured nine wins from 12 completed fixtures, and are currently on a four-game winning streak.

Through KKR’s optimum outcome on the points table, Shreyas became the first captain in the history of the franchise to lead his side to a number one finish in the league stage of an IPL season. Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, KKR previously finished at number two on the points table on two separate occasions (2012 and 2014).

Interestingly, KKR’s two-time IPL winning skipper and previous record holder Gautam Gambhir was appointed as team mentor for IPL 2024 by the team management just a couple of months prior to the launch of the ongoing tournament.

KKR qualified for the playoffs earlier this month by defeating Mumbai Indians by an 18-run margin at the Eden Gardens. Their subsequent match against Gujarat Titans was called off owing to ceaseless rains in Ahmedabad.

Shreyas Iyer and Co. will now face Rajasthan Royals in the final match of the league stage on May 19. The much-awaited contest will be played out at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
