Shreyas Iyer completes the 100 matches milestone in IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper Shreyas Iyer completed a major milestone on Saturday (May 14) when he stepped onto the field against Sunrisers Hyderabad to mark his 100th appearance in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Iyer, who was a member of the Indian squad in the Under-19 World Cup, was first picked up by the Delhi Capitals back in 2015.

The right-hander had set himself a base price of INR 10 lakhs but was eventually picked for a whopping INR 2.60 crores.

The Mumbai lad made his debut against the Chennai Super Kings in the 2015 season and ensured that every penny that DC spent on him in the auction was worth it.

The young man hammered 439 runs in 14 outings at an average of 33.76 and struck at 128.36 with the help of four half-centuries.

Iyer did not get a lot of chances in the following season, but his career took a decisive turn in 2017 when Gautam Gambhir decided to step down as captain of the Capitals.

The Indian batter was appointed skipper in Gambhir's place, and the right-hander thrived when bestowed with the responsibility of leading the team.

He finished the season with 338 runs at an average of 33.8, and his strike rate that year was 139.09, but in the subsequent three editions, Shreyas - the batter and captain - came into his own.

Under him, Delhi went on to qualify for the playoffs in 2018 and 2019 before making their way to their first-ever finals in 2020.

In all those seasons, Shreyas led from the front, scoring 411, 463 and 519 runs, respectively.

However, a shoulder injury before the 2021 edition proved to be the beginning of the end for Shreyas at Delhi.

He missed the first half due to injury, and while he did make a comeback during the UAE leg, Delhi decided to stick with Rishabh Pant as captain.

Shreyas eventually parted ways with the franchise following the culmination of the season. However, he was picked up by the Knight Riders for INR 12.25 crores at the mega-auction and was subsequently appointed captain.

Unfortunately for him, things haven't really gone as per plan this season. While his form has been below par, the team has also struggled for consistency.

In 12 games so far, Shreyas has managed 351 runs @ 29.25/124.76, and his struggles against hard-length and wrist-spin have once again been the talking point this season.

Shreyas, who failed to contribute much with the bat against Hyderbad, would hope to celebrate his milestone game with a win on Saturday (May 14) evening.
