Cricket sure has its quirks and here is one that’s bound to leave fans scratching their heads. Faf du Plessis has been named captain of Namibia’s Under-19 cricket team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Namibia U-19 Gets Faf du Plessis As Captain But Not The One You Know
However, this isn’t the former South African captain who’s a stalwart in franchise cricket and set to don Delhi Capitals' colors in IPL 2025. This is a different Faf du Plessis – a 17-year-old rising star from Namibia, ready to make waves in the cricketing world.
It’s not every day you see a name that reminds you of one of the most accomplished batters of modern-day cricket. But here’s the twist: Namibia’s Faf du Plessis is also a right-handed batter and a handy leg-break bowler.
That’s enough to send fans down a rabbit hole of curiosity. If anything, the young Namibian will have big shoes to fill, purely by virtue of sharing his name with a modern great. But he will be keen to create his own path rather than ride on the coattails of his more famous namesake.
Namibia’s Young Guns Ready For Battle
Du Plessis will lead Namibia’s U-19 side in the World Cup qualifiers in Lagos, Nigeria, with a ticket to the 2026 U-19 World Cup on the line. Namibia has assembled a promising squad that includes Adrian Koetzee, Ben Brassel, Dan Brassel, Eric Lintvelt, Henry Grant, Janko Engelbrecht, Junian Tanayanda, Liam Beson, Luka Mikelo, Max Hengo, Rovan van Wuren, Tian van der Merwe, and Waldo Smith.
It’s a make-or-break moment for these youngsters, as they lock horns with Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda in the Division 1 qualifiers. Namibia’s second clash will see them take on Sierra Leone at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval.
If Namibia qualifies by winning the Africa group, they will have the opportunity to compete as co-hosts in the 2026 U-19 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia. Zimbabwe has already qualified directly as a host nation but Namibia will have to earn their spot on the field.
The stakes couldn’t be higher as only one team will punch their ticket to the main event, and Namibia will be eager to make the cut.
