Shane Watson bats for Tim David's inclusion in the Australian team

Former Australian skipper Shane Watson wants to see Tim David in Australia's squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The countdown to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has officially begun with Australia's World Cup-winning skipper Aaron Finch along with cricket legends Shane Watson, Waqar Younis, and Morne Morkel teamed up with other Australian personalities to launch the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Trophy Tour, driven by Nissan to celebrate 100-days-to-go until Australia hosts the for the first time.

Speaking at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 100 days-to-go ceremony in Melbourne, Watson said if David is in Australia's squad for the World Cup he can fit anywhere in the batting line-up.

"If he’s (Tim David) in the squad and he’s made himself available for Australia... then I’d fit him in really anywhere," Shane Watson was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

David was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 auction for a whopping price tag of Rs 8.25 crore, given his batting prowess. He played a total of eight games for the five-time champions in the last edition of the IPL, scoring 186 with a highest of 46 and a strike rate of 216.

Taking his IPL 2022 performances into account, the former Australian star allrounder pointed out that it was remarkable for a young player like David to come out and dominate in the best T20 league in the World which is why Australia needs to find a way to get him in the team.

"I hadn’t really seen much of him at all up until the IPL (IPL 2022), and seeing what he did there was something that I hadn’t seen for a long time. For a young guy coming in and just dominating and just hitting the ball like I’ve never really seen much in the past... you’d just find a way (to pick him)," added Watson.

Watson has urged Cricket Australia (CA) to find a way to get tall 26-year-old power-hitter Tim David into the side for the ICC T20 World Cup at home, given the kind of talent he will bring to the side as the host nation will look to defend the title they won in the UAE last year.

"It’s hard with Australia being the defending champions … but with someone like that, the power that he has and the composure as well under pressure situations is something that’s very, very rare," Watson concluded.

The Singapore-born batter has previously played 14 T20Is for Singapore but is eligible to play for Australia.

After earning the tag of T20 specialist, he has smashed 2,500 runs in 112 appearances with a career strike rate of 165.44. In the 20-over format, he is one of the most destructive players on the franchise circuit due to his power hitting and finisher capabilities.
