Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi took a hilarious jibe at active speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi for missing out on his country’s Asia Cup 2022 squad.

The pacer sustained a knee injury during Pakistan’s first Test of the two-match series in Sri Lanka last month. The injury prompted him to sit out of the subsequent Test, which his side lost to squander the 1-0 lead they had taken after the opening match.

The youngster also did not feature in Pakistan’s limited-overs tour to Netherlands and is now set to skip the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 tournament in the UAE. Notably, the cricketer was initially selected in the expanded squads for both competitions before he failed to attain the desired fitness levels.

Shahid Afridi jokingly says he warned Shaheen about not diving

Legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi was recently involved in a question-and-answer session with fans on Twitter. When one of the fans asked the former captain to come out of retirement to replace the young pacer for Asia Cup 2022, he jokingly said:

“I told him earlier to not dive since he is a fast bowler and diving could cause injury. But later I realised that even he is an Afridi.”

Pakistan’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign

The Pakistan cricket team recently trashed hosts Netherlands 3-0 in a three-match ODI series. The next assignment for the ‘Men in Green’ features the much-awaited T20 Asia Cup 2022.

Under the leadership of Babar Azam, they will kick-off their campaign with a match against arch-rivals India on August 28. The match marks their first face-off since their marquee clash at the 2021 T20 World Cup while the tournament itself serves as a testing ground for both sides for this year’s World T20 event in Australia.
