  • Seems Like He Doesnt Feature In The Current Scheme Of Things Ashish Nehra On Shamis Absence In The Side

'Seems like he doesn't feature in the current scheme of things,' Ashish Nehra on Shami's absence in the side

Former Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra is of the opinion that Mohammad Shami is not in India's plans for the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

The India and Gujarat Titans (GT) seamer had a decent run in the 2022  Indian Premier League, picking 20 wickets in 16 games, including a wicket in the final, which helped his team win the IPL title in the first attempt.

Even after that, he was ignored for the five-match T20I series against South Africa at home. And according to the Titans coach, Shami is not in the current scheme of things for the upcoming World Cup. Instead, the 2011 World Cup winner suggested team India to play him in the ODI series against England.

"Seems like he [Mohammad Shami] doesn't feature in the current scheme of things for the T20 World Cup. But we all know about his abilities. Even if he doesn't play in this year's T20 World Cup, India will definitely consider him for the 2023 World Cup at home. We don't have many ODIs this year, and Shami is on a break at the moment after the IPL. So India can play him in England for the 50-over games after the Test match," Ashish Nehra told Cricbuzz.

The Rohit Sharma-led team India are bound to play a three-match ODI series against England on their home turf. Regarding the challenge against the defending world champions, Nehra said to beat a top-quality side like England, the team needs the best bowlers. For Nehra, the 31-year-old tearaway pacer is one of India's best bowlers.

"You will play three ODI games against a top-quality white-ball team like England, and you would definitely love to beat them. And for that, you need your best bowlers. I would definitely take Shami in that bracket," added Nehra.

Shami has represented India 17 times in the T20Is, picking 18 wickets. Shami has 148 ODI wickets to his name in 79 games, including a five-wicket haul.

He recently traveled to the UK along with India's Test squad ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test. The game is due to be played from July 1 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The right-arm fast bowler last played for India in the shortest version of the game against Namibia in the T20 World Cup last year, and since then, he has failed to get back into the squad.
