The World Cup 2023 is seeing another potential shakeup in its match schedule, with the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a schedule revision.

BCCI in a fix as Hyderabad seeks World Cup schedule change

The heart of the matter is the back-to-back fixtures at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal. On October 9, the venue will see New Zealand clash with the Netherlands, with the high-voltage Pakistan-Sri Lanka match set for the very next day.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Hyderabad Police have flagged potential security challenges in hosting consecutive matches, particularly spotlighting the Pakistan fixture.

The sheer scale of the operation comes into focus when considering that a single game requires a deployment of around 3,000 police personnel. Moreover, a substantial security presence is mandated at the hotel accommodating the Pakistan team.

These concerns come against a backdrop of a stack of adjustments to the World Cup's initial schedule, which was unveiled 100 days ahead of the event.

The schedule has already experienced nine significant changes, including the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match originally set for October 15. It was repositioned to sidestep a clash with Navratri festival which is celebrated with great vigour in Gujarat.

Insider sources suggest that the HCA was caught off-guard by the revised timetable. They allege that BCCI's top brass made these changes without prior consultation with local officials.

The upcoming ticket sales, slated to kick off on August 25, bring an additional layer of complication to the proceedings. Adjustments at this juncture could potentially disarray plans for ardent fans, more so for international ones bracing for escalating travel and accommodation costs.

As the World Cup 2023 inches closer, all eyes are now on BCCI's next move in response to Hyderabad's pressing concerns.
