Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of South Africa’s squad for their upcoming three-match T20I series against the visiting Indian team. The 27-year-old speedster recently sustained a left lateral ankle sprain and will soon be returning to his provincial team to undergo rehabilitation.

Ngidi was originally selected to represent South Africa in their T20I and Test fixtures against India and was also expected to play a round of four-day matches in mid-December.

On December 8, a mere two days prior to the series opener between hosts South Africa and India, Cricket South Africa (CSA) released an official media statement where they revealed that ace speedster Lungi Ngidi would not be taking part in the T20I segment of home fixtures.

The cricket board cited Ngidi’s newfound left lateral ankle sprain as the reason behind his exclusion and added that the 27-year-old will now be undergoing his rehabilitation process under the supervision of the Proteas medical team.

CSA has already announced fellow fast bowler Beuran Hendricks as his replacement for India T20Is.

As per CSA’s statement, the officials will be working towards Lungi Ngidi’s full recovery in time for South Africa’s two-match Test series against India.

The Test series is slated to commence on December 26, i.e., following the conclusion of the white-ball fixtures between the two sides. The two Test matches also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
