In a significant development, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) have reportedly decided to bring back Kumar Sangakkara as head coach after Rahul Dravid's resignation. It is important to mention that the Sri Lankan legend had also previously served as head coach for the franchise during 2021 and 2024. He later joined as the director of cricket ahead of IPL 2025.

Meanwhile, as per the latest reports, Sangakkara is expected to be officially re-appointed soon and join the RR for the IPL 2026.

Sangakkara Poised For Coaching Return To RR

According to a report by Cricblogger, as quoted by Firstpost, the RR has already spoken to Sangakkara after Rahul Dravid submitted his resignation on August 30, 2025. The franchise has also faced another broader changes, including the resignation of CEO Jake Lush McCrum.

Kumar Sangakkara is not new to the Rajasthan Royals; he has been a vital pillar with the franchise in recent years, and has also played a important role in their 2022 campaign, where the team finished as runners-up.

Overall, these changes could also be due to the Rajasthan Royals' poor and underwhelming performance in IPL 2025. In the last season, the Rajasthan-based franchise ended in ninth place with just 8 points from 14 matches.

The Royals - who won the inaugural IPL title in 2008, will hope that the return of Sangakkara and the continuity of leadership under Samson can help reverse their fortunes in the upcoming season.

An official announcement from the Rajasthan Royals regarding the new coaching setup is expected in the coming days.

Sanju Samson Expected To Retain Captaincy Duties

Adding to the report, Sanju Samson is also set to continue as the team’s captain for the 2026 edition of the IPL, despite a disappointing campaign in 2025. However, currently, Sanju Samson is playing for India in the Asia Cup and was also part of the team in the match against the UAE.
