Leicestershire hosted Nottinghamshire in a crucial Royal London Cup 2022 encounter at Grace Road on August 20. Here is a look at the highlights from the rain-married Group A contest.

Leicestershire vs Nottinghamshire

The high-flying Leicestershire drawcards were humbled at their own backyard as they succumbed to a heavy defeat against the visiting Nottinghamshire side.

Winning the toss and asking their guests to bat first, Leicestershire’s 6-foot-3 speedster Chris Wright removed both openers within the first 10 overs of the innings. At 63-3, Notts skipper Haseeb Hameed shared a 121-run fourth-wicket stand with half-centurion Matthew Montgomery.

Captain Hameed himself struck 99 unbeaten punches as his side charted 255-9 in a rain-shortened 47-over innings. Wright stood out among the hosts’ bowlers by picking up 6-35 off his 10 overs.

Notably, Leicestershire’s lanky pacer’s efforts were topped by Nottinghamshire’s youngster Brett Hutton later in the evening. Hutton dismantled the hosts in his seven-wicket spell, one which featured the wickets of each of the hosts’ top four batters in the run-chase.

Apart from Wiaan Mulder’s 79 and a couple of 20s from Harry Swindells and Arron Lilley, none of the other batsmen scored above five in their response, while eight extras offered by Notts bowlers served as the fourth-best aggregator of the innings.

The hosts eventually folded up for 154, handing a 105-run victory to Hameed’s side by DLS method.
