There has been a lot of speculations related to Rohit Sharma's ODI captaincy future with many believing that the India skipper might even hang up his boots after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy final. However, as per a report by Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, Rohit might leave the ODI captaincy position but will play as a pure batter.
In the previous BCCI meetings, Rohit's future was discussed, but the board will be more than happy if Rohit decides to play only as a batter in the side. Rohit is eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa and wants a younger captain to take over to build a strong team for the ICC event which will take place two years from now.
As per report, Rohit Sharma might even retire if India lose the Champions Trophy final Vs New Zealand on Sunday.
As per sources, the two front-runners to replace Rohit are Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya.
Front-runners to replace Rohit
As per Dainik Jagran, BCCI are looking at Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill as the two front-runners to take over the mantle from Rohit.
Hardik has prior experience of leading the team in T20Is, and also leads the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. However, Gill was made the vice-captain of the ODI team and Team India are looking at him as the future of the side and for long-term perspective, the BCCI could opt for Gill and make him the captain after the end of Champions Trophy.
