Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has found himself at the center of an unexpected controversy after breaching one of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) newly implemented guidelines during the second Test match against England at Edgbaston.

According to reports, Jadeja travelled alone to the stadium on Day 2 of the match, violating the BCCI’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) introduced earlier this year following India's disappointing tour of Australia.

Ravindra Jadeja Breaks BCCI’s Strict Rule

The SOP laid out by the BCCI post the BGT 2024–25, explicitly states that all players must travel together in the official team bus for matches, training sessions, and other official commitments. Travelling separately, unless pre-approved under exceptional circumstances, is strictly prohibited.

However, Jadeja, chose to arrive at the Edgbaston Stadium early on Day 2, ahead of the rest of the team, to put in an additional net session before taking the field. His intent, as he later revealed in the post-day press conference, was to adapt quickly and face extra deliveries in preparation.

"Somewhere I felt that I should go and bat extra because the ball was still new. I felt if I could see the new ball off, it would become easier for the rest of the innings. Luckily, I could bat till lunch, and then Washington [Sundar] also batted well with Shubman. The more you bat in England, the better it is because you never feel you are set here. At any time, a ball can swing, take your edge, or bowl you," Jadeja said in the press conference after the end of Day Two's play.

Jadeja’s preparation was well seen in his innings on Day 2. The left-hander played crucial role in India's dominant first-innings total of 587 runs, scoring a crucial 89 off 137 deliveries. Alongside Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar, Jadeja helped stabilise and build India’s commanding position in the match.

No Sanction Expected Despite SOP Breach

While Jadeja’s action technically breached protocol, ESPNcricinfo reported that the BCCI is unlikely to take disciplinary action. Sources within the board indicated that the team management acknowledged Jadeja’s intentions were performance-driven, not a case of indiscipline.

What Are the New BCCI SOP Guidelines?

The new BCCI protocol, enforced in early 2025, contains a 10-point code of conduct designed to instill discipline and accountability across all formats and age groups. Some of the major directives include:

  • Mandatory group travel for players and coaching staff to stadiums and practice venues.
  • Ban on travelling with personal staff such as chefs, personal security, hairdressers, or stylists.
  • Restrictions on personal outings during match days or without clearance from team management.
  • Compulsory media training and approval for public statements or social media posts during series.
