The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a new set of rules to ensure discipline and professionalism among Indian cricket players. These 10-point guidelines aim to reduce the "star culture" in the team and promote unity, professionalism, and fairness.

Why BCCI Introduced These New Rules?

The BCCI introduced these measures after disappointing performances by the Indian team, like losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a 3-0 defeat to New Zealand. The aim is to build a disciplined, united, and professional cricket team while fostering growth at all levels of the sport.

BCCI's 10-Point stringent Policy For Indian Players

1. Mandatory Participation in Domestic Matches

Players must play domestic matches to stay eligible for national team selection or central contracts. This rule helps players stay connected with the domestic cricket scene, maintain fitness, and inspire upcoming talent. Exceptions will only be allowed in extraordinary cases with approval from the Selection Committee.

2. Traveling Together

Players must travel with the team for matches and practice sessions. Traveling separately with family is discouraged to ensure team bonding and discipline. Special cases require pre-approval from the Head Coach and Selection Committee.

3. Limit on Baggage

There’s now a strict baggage limit to avoid logistical issues and additional costs:

Away long-duration tours (more than 30 days):

  • Indian Players: 5 pieces (3 suitcases + 2 kit bags) OR up to 150 kg.
  • Support staff: 3 pieces (2 big + 1 small suitcase) OR up to 80 kg.

Away short-duration tours (less than 30 days):

  • Indian Players: 4 pieces (2 suitcases + 2 kit bags) OR up to 120 kg.
  • Support staff: 2 pieces (2 suitcases) OR up to 60 kg.

Home series:

  • Indian Players: 4 pieces (2 suitcases + 2 kit bags) OR up to 120 kg.
  • Support staff: 2 pieces (2 suitcases) OR up to 60 kg.

4. Restrictions on Personal Staff

Players can no longer bring personal staff like chefs, security guards, or assistants on tours unless explicitly approved by the BCCI. This ensures a focus on team operations.

5. Coordination for Sending Gear

Players must coordinate with management for sending equipment to Bengaluru’s Centre of Excellence. Any extra costs for separate arrangements will be the player’s responsibility.

6. Full Attendance at Practice Sessions

All players must attend practice sessions completely and travel together as a team. This reinforces discipline and teamwork.

7. No Personal Shoots During Tours

Players cannot participate in personal endorsements or photo shoots during a tour. This ensures they stay focused on their cricket responsibilities.

8. Family Travel Policy

While family visits are allowed during long overseas tours, they come with strict guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Families can join if the player is away for over 45 days.
  • Duration: One visit per series, lasting up to two weeks.
  • Costs: Shared accommodation is covered by the BCCI; other expenses must be paid by the player.

9. Participation in BCCI Events

Players must attend official BCCI promotional events and shoots. These are crucial for fulfilling commitments to sponsors and promoting the game.

10. Completing Tours

Players must stay with the team until the end of the series, even if matches finish early. This promotes unity and avoids disrupting team dynamics.

What Happens If Indian Players Break the BCCI New Rules?

The BCCI stated: "All players are expected to adhere strictly to the above guidelines. Any exceptions or deviations must be pre-approved by the Chairman of the Selection Committee and Head Coach. Non-compliance may lead to disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by the BCCI.

"Additionally, the BCCI reserves the right to take disciplinary action against a player which may include (i) sanction against the concerned player from participating in all BCCI conducted tournaments including the Indian Premier League; and (ii) deduction from retainer amount/match fees under BCCI Player contract.

"This measure ensures accountability and reinforces the importance of adhering to established policies and prioritising Indian cricket."

The BCCI has made it clear that violations will lead to strict consequences, including:

  • Bans from tournaments, including the IPL.
  • Deduction of match fees or retainers from their contracts.
  • Exceptions to these rules need prior approval from the Head Coach and Selection Committee.
