Even at the fag end of his cricketing career, the legendary Ms Dhoni continues to shine for the Yellow Brigade. After successfully leading CSK to their fifth title, the ex-Indian captain will once again take charge of the Chennai-based franchise in the 2024 edition of the lucrative league. On Sunday, Dhoni’s name surfaced as one of the key players to be retained by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2024 IPL edition.

However, the English all-rounder Ben Stokes failed to make the cut and has been released by the franchise ahead of the upcoming season. Whilst commenting on CSK’s auction strategy on his YouTube channel, Ashwin suggested that the franchise will look to consolidate the captaincy position before the inevitable departure of Ms Dhoni. He feels that the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who has been released by KKR has a strong chance of making it to the squad. In addition, he also believes that the opener Ruturaj Gaikwad can be groomed as a potential leader option after MSD.

"The holes that CSK will try to fill are ones of captaincy, which I believe Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to take over, as Ambati Rayudu said in his latest interview. Ben Stokes, too, was taken by CSK on the same philosophy of playing an able right hand. Needless to say, he is a quality leader, and CSK is a team that values experience. I think they’ll go back to Shardul and get their combination back."

Upon releasing Ben Stokes and Ambati Rayadu for INR 16.25 crore and INR 6.75 crore respectively, the CSK are now left with a staggering purse value of INR 31.4 leading into the mini action. While the speculations around Ms Dhoni’s potential replacement continue to do the rounds, it remains to be seen who would ultimately emerge as a viable candidate to replace a man who has led his franchise to glory in five IPL editions.
