In another shocking update ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), have reportedly decided to part ways with veteran spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin. The reason for the split is still unclear, but the spinner has made up his mind, and has conveyed the message to the franchise owners.

Recently, top CSK officials have met to discuss the future plans of the franchise, and the meeting was also attended by Ruturaj Gaikwad, and MS Dhoni. R Ashwin was one of the talking points as CSK aim to bounce back after a disappointing IPL season.

According to Cricbuzz, his plans are unclear, and the spinner could also give up the role of Director of Operations at the CSK Academy. There is a good chance that Ashwin might have played for the last time in IPL 2025, and could go unsold, and here's why.

1) Age not by his side

At 38 years old, Ashwin is not getting any younger, and from next season onwards, teams might hesitate to invest in a player who is well past his prime. Even though spinners can play for a longer duration, it has been observed that franchises tend to ignore players who reach a certain age. Hence, age could be a hindrance for Ashwin to play in the IPL again.

2) Dip in IPL numbers

In the last two seasons, Ashwin's output as a spinner has dipped, and he is no longer a wicket-taking threat. Thus, teams may not want a spinner, who goes for plenty, and hardly takes a wicket.

(Ashwin in last two IPL seasons)

In the last. two seasons, Ashwin has been a pale shadow of his former self, picking up just 16 wickets in 24 matches, with both the average, and economy rate on the higher side. Ashwin was known for his control, and his ability to restrict the flow of runs. But the last two seasons have shown that his skills have diminished.

3) Price tag will be a hindrance

CSK purchased him for INR 9.75 crore in the mega auction last season, and he failed to justify the price tag. If CSK wants to trade Ashwin ahead of the auction, franchises would perhaps be hesitant to pay 9.75 crore to acquire him.

However, if he comes to the mini auction, a bowler of his calibre and experience might keep his base price to 2 crore at least, and again, teams might not be interested in spending such a hefty fee on a 38 year old.
