In the latest development, Ravichandran Ashwin, the recently retired Indian star, is set to don the Indian jersey once again as the wily spinner will represent Team India in the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament. The veteran player retired from all forms of cricket and also bid adieu to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Cricket Hong Kong revealed the development via their social media handle, X, and will represent the Indian team in the tournament that will take place from November 7-9. He will play alongside some of the big Indian stars in the marquee competition as R Ashwin is set to try out different leagues after retirement.
What is Hong Kong sixes tournament?
Hong Kong Sixes is a short six-a-side cricket competition, and the tournament is organized by Cricket Hong Kong. It features unique rules, different from the regular T20 tournaments, such as a batter retiring after scoring fifty runs, and every fielder bowling one over. The tournament was revived after a seven-year hiatus in 2024, and the 2025 edition is set to be bigger and better.
R Ashwin's recent IPL retirement
The off-break bowler represented multiple franchises in the Indian Premier League and was last seen wearing the Yellow Chennai Super Kings jersey. However, the all-rounder had a dismal 2025 season as CSK spent a hefty amount of money to acquire his services.
In nine matches, he only took seven wickets, with an economy rate of 9.13. Overall in the league, Ashwin played 221 matches and picked up 187 wickets.
Before the IPL, R Ashwin also announced his retirement from international cricket. He had represented India in 106 matches and scalped 537 wickets.
