Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin added another feather to his already decorated cap as he received the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, from President Droupadi Murmu at a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28. It was a moment of pride, not just for Ashwin, but for Indian cricket as a whole.
Padma Shri Awarded To R Ashwin For His Legendary Contribution To Indian Cricket
After years of spinning webs around the world’s best batters, Ravichandran Ashwin now has one more accolade to show for his remarkable journey. Over the years, he became a nightmare for batters across formats, building a reputation for being one of the smartest bowlers in the modern game.
With 537 Test wickets, 156 ODI scalps, and 72 T20I dismissals under his belt, Ashwin has been a pillar of India's bowling attack for more than a decade. He played a key role in India’s 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy victories and when it comes to spinning a web in Tests, only Anil Kumble has more wickets for India across formats.
765 wickets in international cricket, those are numbers that speak for themselves.
Ashwin’s Retirement From International Cricket
Every good thing eventually comes to an end, and Ashwin’s international career wrapped up quietly but with dignity. The off-spinner called time on his India stint after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia at the Gabba.
Interestingly, he didn’t even feature in the playing XI for that match. After the game, in a simple yet emotional press conference, Ashwin announced that his days in the India jersey were over.
Instead of dragging it out or chasing one last hurrah, Ashwin bowed out on his own terms, just the way he built his career.
Still Roaring In The IPL with Chennai Super Kings
The veteran spinner is still plying his trade in the Indian Premier League, representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025. Even without the India blues on his back, Ashwin continues to weave his magic, using all that experience and cricketing smarts to fox batters half his age.
