PSL 2022 | Peshawar Zalmi swat away under-strength Islamabad United

Peshawar Zalmi blew away Islamabad United on Thursday, 17 February, in an absolute whirlwind of a game in the Pakistan Super League 2022. A match dominated by two batting performances saw 26 sixes hit on the day, with balls flying all over the park.

However, Zalmi managed to eke out a 10-run win to strengthen their position in the top four.

Led by the young Mohammad Haris Peshawar posted 206 runs while batting first and returned to check the Islamabad total for 196 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, winning the game by a decent margin.

Many injuries for Islamabad

To be fair to Islamabad, they had five changes made to their squad, owing to the unavailability of key players who had either been injured or pulled out of the tournament. But they showed enough courage to stay in the game for 15 overs of their chase till the time pressure became too much for them.

Chasing a huge score without their marquee openers was always going to be troublesome but a little luck mixed with top hitting put Islamabad on the front foot inside the powerplay. Zalmi’s strategy of starting with two leg spinners in Usman Qadir and Liam Livingstone blew up straight in their face after the duo conceded 37 off the first two overs and dropped a catch of Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

The Afghan international’s clean hitting gave Islamabad impetus and helped them reach 50 in the first 4 overs before he got out on 46 off 19 balls.

While the openers could not carry on for much longer, Gurbaz had done enough to establish a base in a ‘hit-or-die’ game.

The Azam Khan show

With the required rate already over 10, Azam Khan walked into the pitch even before the powerplay ended. He took control of the innings timing the ball superbly well and by the halfway mark of the innings reached 98 runs.

Islamabad believed.

The middle overs brought a phase of play when Azam Khan did not really time the ball well but he really could not be bothered about it.

Legendary Moeen Khan’s son kept muscling the ball over the fielders managing to score 85 off just 45 balls. When he got out in the first ball of the 19th over Islamabad needed just 25 off the last two overs, fairly achievable by the modern standards of T20 cricket.

But the passing of Khan meant that the final nail in the coffin had been put into the coffin of the Islamabad chase, and the injury laden team did not have enough batting reserves to pull through at that time.

They lost the game by 10-runs but surely won a lot of hearts for the courage they showed on the day.

Salman Irshad and Wahab Riaz were the pick among the bowlers for Zalmi and picked key wickets in Gurbaz and Azam Khan respectively in tight moments of the game.

20-year-old lights up the stadium

Earlier in the innings, Haris attacked Islamabad bowlers from the ball go and raked up 30 in the first couple of overs. With no Shadab Khan in the line-up, Islamabad found it difficult to control the batter Haris pummelled the fast bowlers to score his half century inside the powerplay.

At the time, it really did not matter that his partner Hazratullah Zazai was struggling to time the ball and got out in the final ball of the powerplay for 13 runs. Mohammad Haris continued on after Zazai’s departure and alongside Yasir Khan put up another quick partnership of 40 off 24 balls.

This incessant attack led to Zalmi crossing the 100-run mark in the 8th over, taking the Zalmi bowlers completely out of the attack. At the time when Haris got out, he had scored an individual 70 off 32 balls with the team up at 113 inside the 10th over.

From there, it was just about the rest of the players continuing the moment, and they did, scoring at the excess of 140 SR.

While the innings were definitely not as good as Haris, they did enough to take Zalmi way over the line.

The win sets up Zalmi well to strengthen their position in the top 4 in the late stages of the league.

WATCH | Wasim Akram’s heated discussion with Karachi Kings' skipper Babar Azam

As Karachi Kings ended on the losing side in the match against Multan Sultans on Wednesday again, it came as their eighth defeat on the trot. Led by Babar Azam, the Kings recorded a decent enough performance with the bat, registering a total of 174 runs on the scoreboard. Things were panning in their favour in the field till the 18th over of the second innings but the tide turned against them in the closing moments of the game. Khushdil Shah smoked quite a few boundaries in the penultimate over as Chris Jordan was taken to the cleaners. A huge 20-run over meant that Multan Sultans required just nine runs in six deliveries to win the match. Umaid Asif was given the job to restrict the Sultans from scoring the remaining runs. In between the final over, cameras panned over Karachi Kings skipper Babar Azam and mentor Wasim Akram as the duo seemed to be having a heated discussion. Akram, who was standing near the boundary line, shared some advice with Babar and was visibly upset because of what transpired in Jordan's over. Asif failed to defend nine runs as Karachi lost their eighth consecutive game in the ongoing season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Amidst the growing views of the viral video, Akram issued a clarification related to the incident on his official Twitter account. "Hello ! Surprised to see reactions on my talking to Babar at the boundary last night. What I was saying was ‘why our bowlers are not bowling yorkers or slower ones offside off’.nothing else . Babar is a wonderful boy and has tried his best. And what he wants for dinner," read Wasim’s tweet. The Kings are still searching for the first win in the tournament and currently lie at the bottom of the points table.

IND vs WI | Windies still search for balance against dominant India

After winning a convincing game in the first T20I fixture of the series, India will be looking to continue their run - albeit with the few forced changes in their line-up. The second T20I match, once again will be played in the Eden Gardens Kolkata under the floodlights and it is possible that they would not have the services of Deepak Chahar and Venkatesh Iyer who were hit in the last game. While Iyer returned to play a fantastic cameo during the chase, there has been no update regarding the conditions of Chahar. However, India will be confident with what they have in their reserves against a team that has not done the basics right throughout the tenure of the tour. Windies, playing in the subcontinent, half a year away from the next T20 World Cup, are struggling to manoeuvre spin. In the first game, they got stuck in the first 10 overs of the game and it took the brilliance of Nicholas Pooran to bail them out of the situation. Windies need to dig deep and figure out very quickly what their best combination is going into the T20 World Cup and who are their best assets that can shine against a team like India. Match Details India vs West Indies, 2nd T20I Date - 18 February, Friday Time - 7 PM IST Venue - Eden Gardens, Kolkata Broadcast - Star Sports Network Pitch & Weather Report When you are playing in Kolkata at this time of the year, the weather prevails over the pitch. Windies captain Kieron Pollard got into a scuffle with the umpire in the last game over the conditions of the ball in the second innings. The dew was so much on the night that Windies players found it quite difficult to bowl. If that is the case once again, Pollard will do well to win the toss and bowl first. On the last day, it did grip the slightest bit on the Eden pitch, but that type of assistance would be minimal for the bowler. The pitch is once again expected to be a slow turner that would favour the batsmen for the larger part of the second innings. Team News India Here is the interesting bit. India have players injured and India have trouble with form. Ishan Kishan probably played his worst knock in international colours the other night, but there is a lot of time before one can actually write him off. Virat Kohli looked fantastic for his brief innings of 17, but let’s call it what it was - brief. Sharma acknowledged the presence of Shreyas Iyer in the pre match press conference but stated that India need someone in the top 4 or 5 who can actually roll their arms over. If that is the case, India can call up Shardul Thakur for Venky while Deepak Chahar could make way for Avesh Khan - a bowler fans really want to see. Probable Playing XI Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Venkatesh Iyer/Shardul Thakur, Avesh Khan, Bhubaneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Yuzvendra Chahal West Indies Jason Holder will possibly be coming back into the game, which means puts West Indies in a very odd position in terms of balance. Their weakest T20 player Roston Chase performed the best among them last night and there is no way that you can leave out an asset just like that. Windies - if they choose to tweak their batting order a little bit, can send Fabian Allen up and drop Holder lower down the order -a place where he can be effective, but this will mean that one among Romario Shepherd, Odeon Smith or Sheldon Cottrell would have to walk out. Both Shepherd and Smith bring batting attributes with them and it is unlikely that the visitors will reduce their batting order after repeated failures. It will be interesting to see how they accommodate both Holder and Chase in the line-up and who they end up sacrificing on the day. Probable Playing XI Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Roston Chase, Rovman Powell, Kieron Pollard (c), Fabian Allen, Jason Holder, Odeon Smith, Akeal Hosein, Sheldon Cottrell CE Fantasy XI Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant, Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Fabian Allen, Roston Chase, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Sheldon Cottrell
