PCB Wants To Play Non Asian Nations in World Cup 2023 Warm-Up Matches - Reports

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly expressed reluctance towards playing their warm-up match against Afghanistan in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

As per a recent media report, the PCB has conveyed its preference to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for facing a team from outside Asia in the warm-up encounter.

PCB reluctant to face Afghanistan

This demand has arisen due to the fact that Pakistan is already slated to play Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2023 ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, prompting the PCB to seek an alternative opponent for the warm-up fixture.

Notably, on Saturday, Cricket Pakistan revealed that the PCB had demanded a change in venues for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 clashes against Australia and Afghanistan. The board had specifically requested relocation of their match against Australia to Chennai and their encounter with Afghanistan to Bengaluru.

The rationale behind PCB’s request lies in the distinctive playing conditions prevalent at these venues. Chennai is known to be conducive to spin bowling and Pakistan apprehends that facing Afghanistan's proficient spinners on such a surface could pose a challenge for their team.

However, the BCCI has dismissed the PCB's pleas forwarded to the ICC. According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Indian Board remains firm in its stance and is unwilling to make any alterations to the proposed schedule.

This response from the BCCI means that the requested venue swap is unlikely to materialize, leaving the PCB with no choice but to confront their concerns head-on. The PCB's reservations surrounding the warm-up match against Afghanistan have added an intriguing subplot to the tournament's build-up.

While the desire to avoid facing a potential opponent twice in quick succession is understandable, it remains to be seen how this impasse between the PCB and the BCCI will be resolved.
