Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has been appointed as the Consultant International Cricket and Players' Affairs at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The PCB confirmed the development late on Friday, October 24, i.e., just a day after Pakistan’s thrashing defeat at the hands of the visiting South African team at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Masood’s appointment for the role casts a unique situation, considering an active player has been nominated by his country’s cricket board to take up a position of authority.
Shan Masood to helm dual role for Pakistan cricket
In a media release, the PCB has appointed Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood as the new Consultant International Cricket and Players' Affairs. As per the sources close to Pakistan cricket and as reported by Cricbuzz, the decision was made by PCB Chairman and ACC President Mohsin Naqvi during a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Shan Masood recently led the Pakistan team in a two-match home Test series against South Africa. While his gritty half-century in the series-opening Lahore Test catalysed Pakistan’s 93-run win, the hosts lost the subsequent decider at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium by eight wickets to have the series levelled 1-1.
As Shan Masood gears up to enter the world of politics and authority, his captaincy tenure with the Pakistan team continues to stand at a crossroads, with the dual responsibility now testing his ability to balance on-field leadership with off-field administrative influence within Pakistan cricket.
The 36-year-old has so far represented the Pakistan team in 44 Tests, and has minted 2,550 runs in the process at an average of 30.72. As Test captain, he has led Pakistan to just four wins while coping 10 defeats from 14 matches.
