Pathum Nissanka Bags Special Record In World Cup Game Against England

Pathum Nissanka on Thursday (October 26) bagged a spectacular record next to his name at the ICC World Cup 2023. The young Sri Lankan opener became only the second player to hit 1,000 One-Day International runs in the year 2023 after India's prodigiously talented Shubman Gill, who holds the numero uno spot with a whopping 1,325 runs.

Nissanka achieved the landmark when he smashed England seamer Chris Woakes for a boundary on the fourth ball of the seventh over in the Sri Lankan run-chase and went to 15 not out. The earnest right-hander reinforced his standing as Gill's closest rival in the One-Day run-chart in grand fashion and became just the second player to reach the 1,000-run mark in the calendar year.

While 2023 has witnessed Gill's tremendous rise into prominence to become India's formidable top-order icon, the last 12 months have also been extremely fruitful for Nissanka, who continues to grow in stature as one of the strong pillars of the inexperienced Sri Lankan batting unit.

Gill has rightfully enjoyed the fanfare and applause from experts for taking a giant stride towards fulfilling his humongous talent but Nissanka has also proven himself at the international stage and held an influential presence against the new-ball attacks.

Gill has been the more explosive and imposing of the two players, enjoying a strike-rate of 104.49 while still averaging upwards of 60 for his incredible tally of runs, while Nissanka has been the more sedate, depending on artistry and elegance to go at 87.44 and averaged shy of 47.

Notably, Nissanka had entered the run-chase of England's modest 156 all out in Sri Lanka's must-win clash in Bangalore only 15 runs short of recording the 1,000-run mark. The 25-year-old was above Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the list of top run-getters for the year 2023.

Nissanka reached the landmark in only his 25th innings for the calendar year despite an acute shortage of One-Day International matches and has been in brilliant form at the ongoing competition with 198 runs in his five innings while averaging close to 42 and going at a strike-rate of 91.24.
