Pakistan enter the first of their must-win encounters from the remainder of the ICC World Cup 2023 campaign on Friday (October 27), taking on an in-form South African side at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The 1992 champions stay put in Chennai, hoping to impose strangleholds on the Proteas in the manner that the spirited Afghans did in a remarkable upset at the historic venue. A defeat to their inexperienced regional rivals held Pakistan back significantly in the league standings, as they now boast of just two wins after five matches.

In contrast, the Proteas have been one of the red-hot teams of the tournament, whose only blip came unexpectedly versus the Netherlands. Either side of the shocking result in Dharamshala, they've hammered Sri Lanka, Australia, England and Bangladesh and look set to qualify early for the knock-outs stage.

Pakistan vs South Africa Head-to-Head Record in ODI World Cups

In the World Cups, however, Pakistan have managed to give South Africa a harder run for the money. They've clinched victories in two of the five matches the two nations have collided in for World Cup glory, losing the remaining three times. Until the 1999 edition in England, South Africa had enjoyed a 3-0 winning streak over Pakistan in World Cups, which changed at the last two editions in 2015 and 2019.
