After the T20 World Cup success, the BCCI and the Indian side are now looking forward as they have an away tour to Sri Lanka starting on July 27.

The Men in Blue will take on the Island Nation for three T20Is, followed by three ODIs. The upcoming series also begins a new era in Indian cricket as it will be Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as head coach, and also the side will be without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja as they announced retirement after the T20 World Cup.

One headache in front of the BCCI is to select Rohit's successor in the T20Is. While Hardik Pandya is the frontrunner to replace the hitman, fresh reports from Indian Express suggest that the Indian dressing room is divided as few players are rooting for Suryakumar Yadav to take over the captaincy.

Notably, Hardik's tryst with injuries is one of the reasons why his captaincy chances hang by a thread.

“It is a delicate matter. There is an argument on both sides of the debate and thus everyone is not on the same page. Hardik’s fitness is an issue but he played a big role in breaking India’s ICC jinx. As for Suryakumar, we have received feedback from the team that his captaincy style was well received by the dressing room,” said a BCCI source involved in decision-making.

Hardik, who was India's vice-captain in the T20 World Cup 2024 has led the side on 16 occasions. Under his leadership, the Men in Blue have won 10 games and lost five.

On the other hand, SKY has also captained India in seven games, winning five and losing two matches. The decision on the next captain will be made soon as the apex board will release the squad for the Sri Lanka series soon.
