In the midst of a spree of retirements, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has made history by becoming the world's longest-serving No. 1 Test all-rounder. This historic feat is ahead of many legendary names as Jacques Kallis and Kapil Dev.
Jadeja's consistent performances over the last few years have enabled him to achieve this milestone. He alone has scored 527 runs at an average of 29.27 in the year 2024 and has picked up 48 wickets at an average of 24.29. These statistics speak volumes about how valuable he is both with bat and ball.
At 36, he is still going strong despite his teammates such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin quitting the Test format.
Ravindra Jadeja Hits It Out Of The Park In Test Format
Thanks to his hard work and performance, Ravindra Jadeja now has the longest streak as Test’s No. 1 all-rounder in the history of the format. He completed 1151 days at the first spot, the most ever done by an all-rounder. Moreover, he was also included in the ICC Test Team of the Year for 2024.
In the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, Jadeja sits comfortably at the top with 400 points. He is ahead of second-ranked Mehidy Hasan Miraz of Bangladesh with 327 points. Other high-profile players on the list are Marco Jansen (South Africa), Pat Cummins (Australia), and Joe Root (England).
This record shows that Jadeja is not only one of the best Indian all-rounders of all time but also one of the greatest in the world.
Jadeja To Quit Test Cricket?
After Ashwin, Rohit, and Virat’s retirement from Test cricket, critics have deemed Ravindra Jadeja as the next in line. While his bowling remains strong (48 wickets in 2024), his batting has been inconsistent. Last year, he scored 527 runs, but in 2023, he managed only 281 runs and 33 wickets.
2022 was even worse, with 328 runs and 10 wickets. Jadeja may continue till the end of the current WTC cycle, but could consider stepping aside to make room for younger talent.
