New Zealand leave out Ajaz Patel for Bangladesh Tests after record-breaking spell vs India

It was shocking to see that Ajaz Patel was named in the 13 man squad of New Zealand named for the two-match series at home against a touring Bangladesh side. The team has however retained Rachin Ravindra as a spin-bowling all-rounder in the side but there is no specialist spinner.

Along with Patel, Kane Williamson will also not be available for the series and in his absence, Tom Latham would lead the side.

“It’s obviously disappointing not to have Kane available for this series but, as we noted in India, he is undergoing a sustained period of rest followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and gradual batting loading,” Gary Stead, the New Zealand coach said in a statement released by the New Zealand Cricket.

Talking about Ajaz Patel’s removal from the squad, the coach said. “You do feel for Ajaz after his record-breaking display in India. However, we’ve always applied a horses-for-courses selection policy and believe the players selected best fit the way we want to take on Bangladesh here at home.”

“We feel having both Rachin and Daryl in the squad gives us a nice balance and the ability to pick a side best suited to the conditions we expect,” he further added.

New Zealand play two Tests against Bangladesh with the first one starting on January 01 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Watch: Pakistan batsman Abid Ali seeks prayers of fans and well-wishers from his hospital bed

Pakistan Test opener Abid Ali was rushed to the hospital during an ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy game in Karachi. He was batting and had crossed the fifty run mark for his domestic side Central Punjab against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the last round of the premier First-Class tournament of the South Asian nation when he suddenly complained of pain in the chest and had to be rushed to an emergency facility. The cricketer as per Pakistan Cricket Board was diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome or ACS and underwent various medical procedures. In a statement, PCB said, “Abid is under the care of Consultant Cardiologist who is liaising with PCB medical team regarding further treatment. He is currently stable." After recovering well, Abid himself released a video from his hospital bed. In the video, the 33-year-old said, “Greetings to all, with the blessings of the almighty I am recovering well. I ask for more prayers, which you have already bestowed upon me, but I ask for more as I have a small medical procedure to undergo tomorrow as well. Hopefully the almighty would help me get through that as well. “I would once again request my fans, my family, media and all my well-wishers to pray for my swift recovery,” he added further. The right-hander, who is the fifth leading run-scorer in Tests this year was awarded Player of the Series against Bangladesh in the two-match Test series just recently. In that series, he scored 263 runs at 87.66. Abid, who made his Test debut in 2019 is also the only player in history to reach three figures on both Test and ODI debuts.

IPL 2022 Auctions to be held in Bengaluru on February 07 & 08: Reports

The Indian Premier League 2022 Auctions would be held in Bengaluru on February 07 and 08, if reports are to be believed. There were earlier rumours that given the rise in cases of Covid-19 in India and the Omicron variant of the virus spreading quickly, the Auctions would be shifted to UAE. “Unless the COVID-19 situation worsens, we will have the IPL mega auction in India. The two-day event will be held on February 7 and 8 and like other years, we plan to hold it in Bengaluru. Preparations are underway,” PTI quoted a senior BCCI official on conditions of anonymity. It is also being said that this might be the last mega auction happening in the cash-rich league as the owners of the original eight franchises believe that for club culture to develop teams must be allowed the trade and retention system instead of having mega auctions every year. In fact, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal said that it is sad and painful to lose players because you can retain only four players after having a big pull of 20-25 players travelling with you for a period of three years. “It is very sad to lose Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada and Ashwin. The auction process itself is something like this. Going forward, IPL should look at this because it’s not that you build a team, give chances to young players, groom them and get them opportunities from franchises, play for the country and then you lose them after three years,” Jindal had said.
