In the latest development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has short-listed five venues to host the T20 World Cup in 2026. In a meeting held by BCCI’s top officials, five cricketing venues were picked, which included Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai. As decided by the officials, this time around, the World Cup will be played in fewer cities as compared to the 2023 event.
Venues in Sri Lanka will also host the matches, since Pakistan will play in a hybrid model, but as of now, it is unclear which venues will host the mega event in the Island Nation. However, the Narendra Modi Stadium is the front-runner to host the finale of the tournament. Moreover, each venue is expected to get at least six games each.
According to reports by Express Sports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) will announce the entire T20 World Cup schedule in the upcoming days as less than 100 days remain for the marquee tournament.
Women’s WC venues not to host T20 WC games
According to the same reports, the BCCI has made it clear that venues that hosted the Women’s World Cup games won’t be allowed to host the matches in the T20 World Cup. That means the likes of Guwahati, Navi Mumbai, and Indore won’t get a chance to host the marquee matches. This policy of BCCI allows rotation of venues and doesn't promote favouritism for a particular venue.
India-Pakistan to play in Colombo
As per the pact between the two nations, India and Pakistan will play their T20 World Cup match in Colombo. If Pakistan reaches the finale, the tournament finals will be played at a neutral venue.
The decision has been made due to the political differences between the two nations as a pact has been signed that they won't travel to each other's nation in the ICC events.
