Mukesh Choudhary credits MS Dhoni & Ruturaj Gaikwad for his IPL 2022 success

Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable IPL season in 2022 as they finished second last on the league table. The four-time champions were jolted by a big injury blow even before the onset of the marquee event as their star bowler Deepak Chahar was ruled out for the entire season.

Meanwhile, the left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, who was signed by the Chennai-based franchise for the base price of INR 20 Lakhs in the IPL 2022 mega auction stepped up on the occasion and tried his best to fill the shoes of Deepak Chahar.

It did take a couple of games for Choudhary to find his feet in the tournament but once he started clicking and scalping wickets with the new ball, there was no looking back for the Pune-based pacer.

The 26-year-old finished the season as the second highest wicket-taker for the four-time IPL winners, bagging 16 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 26.50 and an economy of 9.32.

The left-arm quick, in the recent conversation with his IPL franchise, has revealed that the CSK skipper MS Dhoni and opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad have supported him big time. He further added that the duo has played a huge role in the pacer's cricketing career ever since he joined the Super Kings.

“In my first two matches, I couldn’t perform to my potential. So, I used to talk to him [MS Dhoni] every day and also in between matches. Dhoni told me to believe in my abilities," Choudhary said on Chennaisuperkings.com.

"Rutu [Ruturaj] is my friend… so he was always there with me, he supported me and gave me confidence saying, ''You have everything, you just have to believe in yourself because for every player it happens, where they go through this phase."

"After the Mumbai (Indians) game, I gained confidence and continued to bowl with that confidence,” he added.

Never thought I would play for CSK: Choudhary

Choudhary, who emerged as the leading wicket-taker of Maharashtra in the 2021-22 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, reckoned that he never expected that he would be signed by Chennai Super Kings in the cash-rich league.

“I never thought I would play for the Chennai Super Kings. When I was on the team bus (for the first time), Dhoni tapped me on the shoulder and I was like, ‘Oh this is happening to me and I felt very proud,” the left-arm pacer added.

The young pace sensation alongside Chetan Sakariya has been recently signed as an overseas player by the KFC T20 Max series in Queensland. While Sakariya has signed for the Sunshine Coast, Choudhary will be playing for Wynnum-Manly.

The Queensland Bulls will be organizing their pre-season training camp at Cricket Australia's National Cricket Center in Brisbane. As part of the old exchange programme with the Chennai-based MRF Pace Foundation, Sakariya and Choudhary will train with the team.
