The return of Glenn Maxwell to the Sheffield Shield was challenging for the prolific Australian all-rounder. However, after a four-month layoff, Maxwell was named in Victoria's 13-member squad for three Sheffield Shield 2022-23 encounters.

In his return fixture against South Australia, the Victorian didn't have a great time with the bat, scoring 5 and a duck in his first red-ball game after four long years.

During fielding in South Australia's first innings, the 34-year-old cricketer got a heavy blow on his right hand while fielding in the slips off left-arm medium seamer Mitchell Perry. The all-rounder went on take a low at first slip, but the ball skewed off the outside edge and landed a bounce short of him, and he was struck on the wrist as the ball passed.

The all-rounder was taken off the field after getting hit on the right wrist; however, after the medical team's assessment, it was declared that he hadn't fractured his wrist.

The last few months have yet to be pleasing for Maxwell. Last December, he broke his ankle while running in the backyard, which ruled him out of the Big Bash League 2022-23.

Earlier in the week, a few reports mentioned that the Australian star would return to the international fold with the three-match ODI series against India, scheduled for March 2023.

Maxwell is one of many Australian cricketers who is struggling with fitness. Test regulars David Warner and Josh Hazlewood had to fly back home, leaving the rest of the squad in deep waters for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2023).

The Pat Cummins-led lineup has lost two Tests against India in this ongoing BGT, and the remaining tour will be a long one for the tourers.
