Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater has been stripped of his lifetime membership and hall of fame status by Cricket NSW. The decision was made during a member vote on Monday, following Slater's convictions for domestic violence offences. The decision effectively removes a formal honour he had held since 2016.

Michael Slater guilty of domestic violence and women's abuse

Even after Michael Slater submitted a written appeal to keep the membership, the board's motion to revoke it passed. His place in the state's hall of fame, awarded in 2015, had already been taken away prior to the meeting.

Notably, Slater was sentenced in a Queensland court last April after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of choking a woman. The judge in the case directly linked his actions to his struggle with alcohol.

“It’s obvious, Mr Slater, that you are an alcoholic. Regrettably, your alcoholism has brought an end to your profession. Your rehabilitation will not be easy — alcoholism is part of your make-up,” Judge Glen Cash told the court back in April.

Since 2016, five different women in New South Wales have also taken out protection orders against the former Test opener. Hence, related to his behavioural issues and alcoholic nature, it is understood that Cricket NSW have enforced the removal of his status.

Slater's glorious records for Australia

Michael Slater played 74 Tests for Australia, forming a famous opening partnership with captain Mark Taylor. After his playing career ended in 2001, he moved into broadcasting but lost his television role in 2021.

He now joins a very short list of individuals to have such honours withdrawn by Cricket NSW, a move that underscores the organisation's stance on serious off-field conduct and no-tolerance policy on women abusers.
