MI Youngster Breaks All-Time South African Record With His Debut vs WI

West Indies and South Africa faced each other in the first of the three match T20I series at the Brian Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The home team managed to win the game by a convincing margin of seven wickets with 13 balls remaining in the game. 

Kwena Maphaka became the youngest South African male player to make a debut


While West Indies won the match rather easily, it was a dream day for the young South African bowler, Kwena Maphaka. The youngster became the youngest male player to make an international debut for the nation. His first match came at the age of 18yrs 137 days, which beat the previous record of Phenyo Victor Mpitsang, who made his debut for South Africa aged 18 years and 314 days.

West Indies won the first T20I convincingly

While the South African bowlers were getting hammered by the home team batters, the youngster managed to impressed with figures of 1/25 in 3.5 overs. 

The South African team batted first in the game and posted 174/7 in their 20 overs. Tristan Stubbs was the star with the bat as he scored 76 runs off 42 deliveries. Patrick Kruger also played a brilliant knock of 44 off 32 and helped South Africa to a fighting total. 

In the chase, the top three of West Indies fired and made the task easy for the team. Nicholas Pooran starred with 65 off 26, while Shai Hope (51 off 36) and Alick Athanze (40 off 30) played the perfect supporting roles. 

Kwena Maphaka's IPL 2024 stint with MI

Notably, Maphaka was bough for INR 50 Lakhs by Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024. However, the youngster failed to impress in the opportunities he got. In the two games he played, Maphaka conceded 89 runs in 6 overs while picking up a single wicket.
