Matthew Kuhnemann Reported For Suspect Bowling Action [Source: AP]
Australia spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspect bowling action following his standout performance in the Test series against Sri Lanka. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the left-arm spinner will now have to undergo mandatory testing to determine if his bowling action is legal.
“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.
Why Was Matthew Kuhnemann Reported?
Kuhnemann played a crucial role in Australia’s series victory, taking 16 wickets in just two Test matches. However, match officials raised concerns about his bowling action after the second Test in Galle. As per ICC regulations, any bowler suspected of having an illegal action must undergo testing within 21 days.
If the tests confirm that his action is illegal, Kuhnemann will be banned from bowling in international matches until he modifies his action and gets clearance.
The 28-year-old has been making steady progress in international cricket. After debuting during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in 2023, he quickly became a key part of Australia’s spin attack. His strong showing in Sri Lanka made him the highest wicket-taker of the series, with an average of 17.18. Over his career, Kuhnemann has played five Test matches, four One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 55 T20 games in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Despite his experience, this is the first time his bowling action has been questioned in his eight-year professional career.
While waiting for his bowling action test, Kuhnemann will still be allowed to play domestic cricket for Tasmania. Cricket Australia has assured full support for him and will work closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to resolve the matter.
