Speaking on Star Sports ahead of India's fixture against Hong Kong, Gambhir said that given the form Surya is in at the moment, he should be batting at No.3 on a permanent basis.
Surya batted at No.5 in Sunday's game against Pakistan, with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja coming ahead of him.
Gambhir believes that Virat, being an experienced batter, can play anywhere in the order, stating that the 33-year-old should bat at 4.
Here's what Gambhir said:
"See, I have a reason behind it. The reason is that you don't fiddle with someone's form, just because you want someone else to get back in form. He was unbelievable in England when everyone struggled,"
"He was brilliant in the West Indies as well. He's 30 as well. He is not like 21, 22. He doesn't have a lot of time on his hands. Make him bat at No.3, make the most of his form and Virat Kohli, he has got so much experience, he can still come and bat at No.4, depending on the situation as well. I personally feel that Surya should be batting at No.3 from here on till the World Cup and see how the results is going to be," said Gambhir as quoted by India Today.
Suryakumar Yadav dazzles with a breathtaking display against Hong Kong
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, on Wednesday, once again displayed why he is one of the best T20 batters of the current era.
Coming in to bat at No.4 following a torturous knock from opener KL Rahul (39 off 36), Surya painted the Dubai International stadium with his audacious 360 degree stroke-play.
The right-hander smoked 6 fours and as many sixes to rack up a breathtaking unbeaten 68 off 26 deliveries and take India to 192/2 in 20 overs.
He got decent support from Virat, who scored an unbeaten 44-ball 59 with the help of 1 four and 3 sixes.
