The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced Mehidy Hasan Miraz as their new ODI captain for 12 months. He has replaced Najmul Hossain Shanto and will be hoping to take the Bangla Tigers in a new direction under his leadership.

Interestingly, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has captained Bangladesh in four ODIs in the past when the regular skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was absent. Overall, 17 players have led Bangladesh in the ODI format and their first match was in 1986.

Bangladesh's maiden ODI captain was Gazi Ashraf who led the country in seven matches from 1986 to 1990. He lost all the matches as captain, and Bangladesh finally secured their first ODI win in 1998 against Kenya under the captaincy of Akram Khan.

Winless Mehidy Hasan Miraz Expected To Revive Bangladesh's ODI Fortunes

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the newly appointed full-time captain could not win a single game when he led the country in four ODIs last year. However, the security of 12 months is likely to him in building a new team and culture in Bangladesh's ODI setup.

His predecessor, Najmul Hossain Shanto led Bangladesh in 13 ODIs and could win just four matches. Thus, selectors have decided to replace him and Miraz now has the responsibility to bring Bangladesh's ODI cricket back on track.
