Lord’s Cricket Ground in London is not just another stadium. Known as the 'Home of Cricket', it is where history is made and remembered. It’s where every cricketer dreams of performing at their best, especially scoring a century and getting their name on the Lord’s Honours Board, a board that proudly displays the names of players who’ve scored centuries or taken 5 or 10 wickets in a match at this historic venue.
However, scoring at Lord’s is not easy. One major reason is the famous slope, the ground isn’t level. One side of the pitch is higher than the other, which makes batting and bowling more challenging.
Despite having some of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket, India have several legendary names who surprisingly never scored a century at Lord’s. Let’s look at these big names.
1. Sunil Gavaskar
One of India’s greatest ever batter, Sunil Gavaskar was the first to score over 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He has 34 Test centuries to his name. But despite all his greatness, Gavaskar could never get to the magical three-figure mark at Lord’s. He played there multiple times, but that one special century at the iconic ground remained missing from his glittering career.
2. Sachin Tendulkar
Known as the “God of Cricket”, Sachin Tendulkar scored 100 international centuries, 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs. From 1989 to 2012, he played all over the world and conquered almost every bowling attack.
But the Lord’s century remained one of the few things missing from his record. Despite multiple appearances, he never got a hundred at Lord’s and his name is missing from the Honours Board.
3. Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli, who recently retired from Test cricket, is known for his aggressive style and consistency. With over 30 centuries in Tests and 51 in ODIs, many expected him to score big at Lord’s. But just like Tendulkar and Gavaskar, Kohli too couldn’t score a century at this ground. He has played at Lord’s in both Tests and ODIs but never crossed the hundred mark.
4. VVS Laxman
One of the most stylish Indian batsmen, VVS Laxman is known for his match-winning innings, especially against Australia. Yet, when it came to Lord’s, the elegant right-hander couldn’t manage a century in any format. He played at Lord’s but his name, unfortunately, didn’t make it to the Honours Board.
5. Virender Sehwag
A batter who changed the way openers approached Test cricket, Virender Sehwag was fearless and explosive. He has multiple double and even triple centuries in Tests. But at Lord’s, the best he could manage was 84 runs in a Test match. Like many others, the Lord’s century eluded him.
6. Cheteshwar Pujara
A modern-day Test specialist, Cheteshwar Pujara has built his reputation with patience and grit. With 19 Test centuries and over 100 matches, he’s been one of India’s best in recent years. But even he hasn’t scored a century at Lord’s yet, despite playing several matches there.
