One of the finest white-ball spinners in England domestic cricket, Will Beer, has opted to leave the Sussex County team after 15 years. He will feature in his final domestic game for the Sharks against Hampshire on July 3 (Sunday).
Coming through the ranks of the U-19 team, he got an opportunity to feature for the Sussex senior team in 2008. Since then, he has been a part of 229 games for Sussex, scored 1720 runs and picked 211 wickets across all the formats.
He was a part of the Sharks team, which went on to win their first and only T20 title in 2009. He scalped seven wickets in 11 appearances at an economy of 7.31.
In the shortest format, he is the leading wicket-taker for the club with 106 scalps in 135 matches.
In 2021, the talented spinner had signed a T20-only contract with Sussex.
In the ongoing T20 Blast, the 33-year-old has bowled only 6.5 overs in four matches and is wicket-less at an economy of 9.65. The success of spinners Delray Rawlins and Rashid Khan has also kept him from getting enough opportunities this season.
"I've had a great 15-year career with Sussex and loved every minute of it," Beer told the club website. "I will look back with fond memories."
"My career has taken a bit more of a white-ball path throughout the years," Beer said. "So to be a leading wicket-taker in a specific format in Sussex's history is something I am incredibly proud of," he added.
Beer expects to play for a different County next season but is also preparing for an exam in financial services.
