Kapil Dev lead India to a World Cup win in 1983 (Twitter)
Kapil Dev, the former World Cup-winning captain and all-rounder, recently criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He recalled the previous World Cup held in India, where the Indian team had a very busy schedule, playing 11 matches and having to travel extensively. In an interview with The Week, Dev expressed that if he were the BCCI president at that time, he would have arranged a chartered flight for the team to reduce the fatigue caused by frequent travel.
Kapil Dev's main concern was to ensure that the players could give their best performance on the field. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the BCCI to take care of such logistical matters, like arranging chartered flights for the team, so that the players can focus on their game without being fatigued by excessive travel.
“Now, how can I look after my team when they are playing in India? You are going to Dharamshala, then to Bengaluru, to Kolkata… playing in nine different places. Somebody asked me, and I said, ‘If I were the board president, I would have a chartered flight for my team,” the former all-rounder said.
When asked about India not winning an ICC tournament in the last ten years, Kapil Dev refuted the idea that the team's performance has been lacking. Instead, he focused on the positive aspects and highlighted how India has consistently made it to the knockout stages in almost every tournament they have participated in. Kapil Dev expressed his confidence in the Indian team, stating that he believes they have the potential to overcome the final hurdle and win the upcoming ICC tournament.
“Doesn’t matter. We are still playing well. It’s not like winning trophies is everything, but we are reaching the final, the semifinals, we are there, but you have to cross the final hurdle to win."
The 2023 ODI World Cup will be played in India later this year. India will play their first game against Australia on October 8.
