KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma should be India's first-choice openers, believes Robin Uthappa

Team India under coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma have not shied away from experimenting. The batting line-up, in particular, has seen a flurry of chopping and changing, with India trying different opening pairs across their recent T20I series.

Sharma and KL Rahul are India's preferred openers in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022, which has so far yielded poor results. The duo failed to provide the desired results against Pakistan and Hong Kong, adding 1 and 38 runs for the first wicket across both T20Is.

Former India opener Robin Uthappa has urged the Indian team management to continue with the pair of Rahul and Rohit, and not think of bringing Rishabh Pant up the order.

"KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma should be the first-choice opening pair, no doubts. If there are any fitness or injury concerns, then Pant can also do the job at the top of the order. There are way too many options, and there is too much flexibility. Everyone can open the innings and there is too much competition in this country that players are ready to play anywhere in the playing XI,"

Rohit Sharma has started playing unorthodox shots: Uthappa

Uthappa, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup winning squad in South Africa and opened the batting with Sharma in the tournament, spoke in detail about recent changes observed in the Indian all-format captain's approach.

"Even Rohit Sharma has started to play the unorthodox shots. The evolution might not be enjoyed by the traditional viewers, but it is highly enjoyable for contemporary viewers.”
