Asia Cup 2022: Mahela Jayawardene takes a dig at Bangladesh

The cricketing fraternities from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have their own rivalry brewing, one which launched with the infamous dancing celebrations by the latter in 2018. The intensity from both camps were quite obvious in their recent Asia Cup 2022 clash as well, which saw the Lankans snatching a two-wicket win in a crisis thriller.

Prior to the match, both camps took digs at each other’s bowling attacks, with Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka saying Bangladesh does not have more than two quality bowlers. The Bangladesh team director, Khaled Mahmud, responded back by saying the island nation does not even feature a single good bowler in their line-up.

Following the see-saw tussle, former Sri Lankan captain and all-time great Mahela Jayawardene enraged the rivalry a little further with a snarky comment on Twitter.

Jayawardene hails “world class performance” from Sri Lanka

Batting legend Jayawardene congratulated the Sri Lankan team on Twitter after their close win in Dubai. He described his side’s performance as a “fantastic fightback” in a must-win game, considering their opening defeat to Afghanistan earlier in the tournament.

The former cricketer also hailed Dasun Shanaka’s draw cards by describing their win as a “world class performance”, thus taking a jibe at their Asian opponents following the pre-match war of words.

Notably, the 45-year-old had earlier launched a scathing attack against Bangladesh team director Mahmud for his comments prior to the match. Jayawardene urged the Sri Lankan team to put up a commanding performance on the field to prove the senior Bangladeshi wrong.

Sri Lanka will now face Afghanistan in the Super Four round on September 3 in Sharjah. Shanaka and co. will be hoping to erase the scars from their previous meeting, which saw an insurgent Afghan unit overcoming the Lankan challenge with ease.
