Khaled Mahmud questions Bangladesh's approach of playing T20 cricket

Bangladesh men's cricket team director Khaled Mahmud has lashed out at the batters for their conservative approach in the seven-wicket loss to Afghanistan in Sharjah on Tuesday (August 30).

After winning the coin toss, Bangladesh decided to bat first in their first game of the tournament against Afghanistan. However, they could only manage to put up 127 on the board, featuring just one six.

In recent times, Bangladesh's batting has been under the scanner due to the lack of firepower in their line-up. The conservative approach has not helped their cause to put up a big total which is the necessity in the 20-over format.

Mahmud seeks intent from batters

Speaking about Bangladesh's questionable approach with the bat against Afghanistan, Khaled stated that he wants to see players playing with more intent in the 20-over format.

"Mosaddek (Hossain) hit the only six of the [innings] although it was a lucky one as the fielder caught it and touched the rope. But I would never blame him for that shot. He had the intent to hit a straight six. I want to see the others at least trying. That's all I want to see," said Khaled Mahmud in a press conference on Wednesday (August 31), before the match against Sri Lanka.

"I don't want to see them getting out after defending 15-20 balls. It is very hurtful. You can have 50 for 3 or 50 for 4 or 40 for no loss in the powerplay, but you can't take pressure from both sides."

The undeniable truth

Mahmud might sound harsh but is not wrong. One of the biggest reasons why Bangladesh have been horrible in the shortest format of the game is because of their conservative approach.

With the aim of confirming a Super Four berth in the Asia Cup 2022, Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka in their second Group 'B' match on Thursday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
