On Thursday (4 August), Sussex County Cricket Club announced that the speedster Jofra Archer has extended his contract by one more year, which would see him play for them until 2023.

Archer made his debut for Sussex in 2016, and since then has been a major wicket-taker for the team. In 43 first-class matches, the 27-year-old has scalped 181 wickets, with the best match figures of 11/137.

However, Archer last featured for the Club in May 2021. He missed the entire 2022 season due to stress fracture on his lower back.

Archer and Sussex head coach elated by the extension

The talented speedster expressed his delight to extend the contract and hopes to contribute to Sussex victories. Head Coach, Ian Salisbury reckoned that Archer is already a legend at the club due to his performances in the international circuit.

“It’s been a difficult few months not being able to represent Sussex when the plan had been to return to the Sharks team after my elbow injury, so I am really happy to extend my contact and hope to be able to contribute to more Sussex victories in the future," said Archer.

England White-ball team struggling without Archer

Archer has not featured in an international game since March 2021. His absence was certainly felt in the recent series against India and South Africa, wherein the Three Lions failed to secure victories due to lack of wicket-taking bowlers.

Along with Archer, the notable absentees from the England squad have been Chris Woakes and Mark Wood due to injury concerns.
