Joe Root snaps top award, Bumrah and Rohit amongst top names

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and star pacer Jasprit Bumrah have been honoured and named 'Wisden Cricketer of the Year' among five other players, in the 2022 edition of the Wisden Almanack. Besides the Indian duo, Joe Root was named the 'Leading Cricketer of the Year' after a sizzling season in 2021.

Jasprit Bumrah, a self taught cricketer to a great extent, grabbed attention with his unorthodox, sling arm bowling action and a flurry of wickets in his first season of the Indian Premier League. As time went on, Bumrah became an integral part of the Indian squad and built a reputation for his mastery in death bowling, hitting the blockhole and toe crushing yorkers.

The pacer proved to be a paramount asset for the Indian team in last summer's test wins. His bowling figure was 3 for 33 on the final afternoon at Lord's, and he subsequently drove the team to victory. Bumrah took a total of 18 wickets in the four tests against England. It can be said that Bumrah is currently the most valuable bowler for the Indian team.

The newly appointed captain of the Indian men's team, Rohit Sharma, was also honoured by the Wisden Almanack. Rohit Sharma has been a consistent name in the Indian squad since June 2007. Following a hearty season last summer, where he scored a laborious 83 in gruelling conditions in India vs England Test Series. As a result, he was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.

His performance led the Indian team to a 2-1 win in the series. His series total was 368 runs, higher than anyone else in the Indian team.

Former England skipper, Joe Root, was named the 'Leading cricketer of the year'. Root had a historic 12 months where he scored a total of 1708 runs in a year. The third most in history. Despite his misfiring as a captain, Root played his part as a batter for the England team.

Apart from Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma; New Zealand opener Devon Conway, England pacer Ollie Robinson and South Africa Women's skipper Dane Van Niekerk were also named 'Wisden Cricketers of the Year'

South African batswoman Lizelle Lee was pronounced the 'Leading Woman Cricketer of the Year'. She is known for her hard-hitting batting style and slugging big sixes. She is currently at the top of the ICC ranking and scored a total of 632 runs in the ODI format.

Mohammad Hasnain successfully modifies his bowling action - Reports

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Hasnain reportedly has successfully modified his bowling action, which was deemed illegal on February 4. As per Cricket Pakistan, Hasnain has rectified his action under the supervision of Umar Rasheed and will approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) for reassessment soon. The 22-year-old speedster's action came under the scanner while he played for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League 2021-22. Further, the testing led to his action being declared illegal. "The modification of Hasnain's bowling action has been completed under the supervision of Umar Rasheed at the National High-Performance Center (NHPC)," Cricket Pakistan reported. The latest test revealed that Hasnain's elbow extension is now in conformity with the set parameter of 15-degree limits. As a result, the ICC will directly send him to a recognised laboratory, and he will be cleared for an international cricket return if he passes the test. "Tests at a local laboratory also found that the elbow of his arm was within the legal range of 15-degree limits. After complete satisfaction, the PCB will now formally request a review from the ICC." "The world's governing body will send Hasnain to a recognised laboratory for a test. He will be allowed to play international cricket if clearance is obtained," the report added. Moises Henriques, the Sydney Sixers captain, was heard accusing Hasnain of chucking in a BBL game. Following this, his action was assessed in Lahore, and the previous report adjudged it illegal. The Pakistan bowler played five matches in the BBL season, picking up seven wickets.

"Best to move on and not think too much"- Mayank Agarwal on PBKS's 9-wicket hammering against DC

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Mayank Agarwal has urged his teammates to 'move on and not think too much' about the chastening nine-wicket hammering they received at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday evening. Despite having a less than ideal build-up to their fixture against PBKS owing to the Covid outbreak in their camp, the Capitals flexed their muscles to the hilt and outplayed the Punjab franchise with ridiculous disdain. Batting first, Punjab's gung-ho approach from the word go came back to bite them as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. While Khaleel Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman claimed three wickets between them. While Delhi's trio of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Lalit Yadav did the bulk of the damage. Punjab was eventually dismissed for 115 in 20 overs, with Jitesh Sharma (32 off 23 deliveries) finishing as the highest run-getter, followed by Mayank, who scored a 15-ball 24. In response, Delhi made a mockery of the target of 116 as Prithvi Shaw (41 off 20 deliveries) and David Warner (60* off 30 deliveries) hammered 83 runs in just 6.3 overs. Their target was easily achieved in the 11th over. Speaking at the post-match presentation, an understandably disappointed Mayank termed it as a 'day to forget' besides admitting that losing too many wickets upfront is something his side needs to address. He also urged his teammates to move on, learn and focus on the next game. "It's a tough one, a day to forget for us. Best to move on and not think too much into the game. We didn't bat and bowl well. We just need to move on from today. We have been losing too many wickets too early. That's a concern," "Don't want to dwell too much. If we do so, a lot of negatives will come out. A total of around 180 could have been competitive. In hindsight, I could have given a couple of overs early for the spinners, but I didn't do so," he added. Punjab have now suffered consecutive defeats and have just 6 points after seven games. They will face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 25.
