Jayawardene loses cool on Twitter, criticises Sri Lankan Police replying to journalist

Legendary cricketer Mahela Jayawardene lost his temper on Twitter while replying to a Sri Lankan journalist on the issue of the economic crisis in his country.

Sri Lanka is going through an awful economic phase in its history. The debt-ridden country is running out of food, fuel, and other essential items. Amid the crisis, the locals have taken to the street to protest against the government.

In a recent series of tweets, Jayawardene can be seen defending the protesters and showing his wrath against the injustice of Sri Lankan police on the protesters. 

A journalist shared an update on the crisis where the police shot at the protesters resulting in the killing of one and injuring 10. 

Replying to this news, Jayawardene tweeted, "If the people were violent and damaging public property, they can be arrested but no excuse to shoot at them? Is this democracy? Is this law of the land? Whoever is responsible for this must be bought to justice… SL police, shame on you." 

The legendary cricketer further shut down the trolls who questioned his sudden growth of courage. The troll wrote, "Sudden growth of balls". To which he was quick to reply and said, "I had balls to fight the system when you were in your father's… so don't worry about mine. Stay focused".

Before this incident, Jayawardene had tweeted his views about the situation, and they read as follows.

"I am sad to see emergency law and curfew in Sri Lanka. The government cannot ignore the need of the people who have every right to protest. Detaining people who do is not acceptable, and I am very proud of the brave Sri Lankan Lawyers who rushed to their defense".

"True leaders own up to mistakes. There is massive urgency here to protect the people of our country united in their suffering. These problems are man-made and can be fixed by the right, qualified people. Certain people controlling the economy of this country have lost the people's confidence and must stand down. We then need a good team to give the country confidence and belief. There is no time to waste. It is time to be humble, not make excuses, and do the right thing."

Mahela is currently in India with the Mumbai Indian squad for the ongoing season of IPL. He has always been vocal about the ongoings in his country and never feared speaking against the government.
