The recently concluded Test series between India and Australia broke several viewership records. The fans turned up in thousands, and record attendance was noticed at the MCG and SCG. Looking at the growing viewership, the latest reports suggest that the ICC wants to introduce a two-tier system in cricket to increase the number of matches between India, England, and Australia.
Jay Shah Wants To Introduce Two-Tier System In Test Cricket
There is no doubt that India, England, and Australia are the top three teams and the ICC wants them to play more often. Thus, the idea is to introduce two-tier system in Tests like football where top seven teams will be placed in tier 1 and the rest five Test playing nations in tier 2.
However, the move cannot be implemented before WTC 2027 ends because of the already scheduling in place till 2027 in the Future Tours Program. If it gets executed the way Jay Shah-led ICC is planning, then India, England, and Australia are likely to play against each other approximately thrice in three years.
BCCI Rejected The Idea In 2016
Although it is worth noting that it is not a new idea as the same idea was proposed in 2016, but interestingly, it was rejected by then BCCI president Anurag Thakur.
“The BCCI is against the two-tier Test system because the smaller countries will lose out, and the BCCI wants to take care of them,” then-BCCI president Anurag Thakur said in 2016.
Recently, former India head coach Ravi Shastri too spoke in favour of a two-tier system in cricket to increase the excitement and brand value of Test cricket.
