Jason Roy finally gives his reason for backing out from the IPL

England opener Jason Roy has come out in the open to speak about his unorderly mental state during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022. Despite his heroic show with the bat for Quetta Gladiators, accumulating as many as 303 runs in mere six matches, Roy had a tough time coping with stress.

While Roy's PSL performance awarded him an IPL contract and a place in Gujarat Titans, the England international backed out at the last minute, and the star batter became a subject to criticism due to his withdrawal from the league. However, he has finally opened pandora's box for his decision.

Although Roy had a stellar PSL season with the bat, he could not enjoy it fully as he fought a mental battle. He revealed it as a reason behind him cancelling his IPL contract.

"Things mentally weren't right with me at the PSL. I was in a weird place because I was playing good cricket, but I wasn't enjoying myself, I wasn't happy, and it was just a dark time. It was just a good two months to come home and live a normal life for a bit after a tough couple of years. (There were) a lot of months away. Over 50 days of hotel quarantine the year before and then having a child in January and having to spend time away from him was just a bit too much," Roy said as quoted to Sky Sports.

After spending some time away from cricket and with his family, the 31-year-old felt rejuvenated.

"I missed the IPL to spend some time at home, and it has refreshed my mind and body, and I recognised where I was at with a lot of things. So, it is nice to be here now, and I'm chomping at the bit to put the badge back on. It's the same for Surrey. I've loved every minute of that. It's a nice feeling to be in love with the game again," Roy cited.

Currently, the Durban-born is busy playing a home ODI series against Ireland. While Roy had a mellow outing in the first fixture, he was seen at his best in the recent match, smashing 73 runs off 60 deliveries.
