Ishan Kishan was released by Mumbai Indians [Source: @Shebas_10/x.com]
Young wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan has been a staple for Mumbai Indians (MI) for six long seasons. Since his debut for them in 2018, he’s been a crowd favourite, second only to Suryakumar Yadav in runs scored for the franchise. However, he was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
Mock IPL Auction Sees Ishan Kishan Go to Lucknow for ₹ 14.5 Crore
Now, it looks like Ishan Kishan won’t be donning that MI blue if Ashwin’s mock IPL 2025 auction is anything to go by. In a turn of events, Kishan was picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a ₹ 14.5 crore in Ashwin’s mock auction.
Now here’s the kicker: while ₹ 14.5 crore sounds like a king’s ransom, it’s actually a pay cut for Kishan. Mumbai Indians shelled out a jaw-dropping ₹ 15.25 crore for him back in the 2022 mega auction.
This means, if the real IPL auction in Jeddah takes a similar turn, Kishan could be pocketing a full ₹ 75 lakh less. Guess the mega price tag didn’t deliver the mega results MI hoped for.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s mock auction didn’t skimp on drama. CSK threw in the first big bid, straight at ₹ 5 crore. Punjab Kings (PBKS) joined the fray but dipped out once things reached the ₹ 10 crore mark. LSG took it from there, battling it out until they finally snatched him up for ₹ 14.5 crore.
Will MI Buy Ishan Kishan In IPL 2025?
There’s a bigger question floating around now: does Mumbai Indians trust Kishan like they used to? This year, they decided to retain Tilak Varma over Kishan. Maybe MI’s patience ran out? Or maybe Tilak has simply outshone Kishan in recent times. Either way, it’s a bit of a signal.
Kishan’s stats tell an interesting story. While his 2020 season was incredible—he racked up 516 runs with a strike rate of 145.74—that kind of firepower hasn’t exactly been consistent. There are openers who’ve done better than him, and most of them got retained this time around.
In 105 matches, Kishan has scored 2644 runs at an average of 28.43 and a strike rate of 135.86. No centuries yet, but he’s hit 16 fifties, with the highest score of 99.
