The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reintroduced a crucial rule for the uncapped category of Indian players ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction.

In a significant development, the board declared that a previously capped Indian player could now be classified as uncapped if they have not played in any international cricket (Test, ODI, or T20I) over the past five calendar years or if they do not hold a central contract with the BCCI.

This adjustment has sparked immediate reactions among cricket fans, particularly about former Indian captain MS Dhoni. Memes and posts flooded various platforms, with users speculating that the ‘uncapped player’ rule was brought back specifically to allow him to feature in the 2025 IPL season without taking up a coveted capped player slot. The reintroduction of the uncapped player rule also coincides with revising the retention policy for the 2025 IPL. Teams can retain a maximum of six players, with either retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option. However, only five players can be capped, whether Indian or overseas, while up to two uncapped players may be retained. This rule, previously abolished after IPL 2021, has now been returned.
