Cameron Green celebrating a CSK wicket (BCCI)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) knocked defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs race by securing a comprehensive win in Bengaluru.
The outcome also marked RCB’s sixth win in succession as they miraculously secured the final playoffs berth for themselves.
Here’s the timeline of how RCB vs CSK panned out in Bengaluru-
RCB vs CSK Highlights: Virat Kohli The Aggressor In RCB’s Fiery Start
RCB captain Faf du Plessis played the role of a silent partner during his 78-run opening partnership with Virat Kohli. At a time when the South African batter had consumed 29 deliveries to score just 30 runs, Kohli raced to a 28-ball 47 to defy CSK’s in-form bowling attack.
The legendary RCB opener smacked three boundaries and four sixes to soar past 700 runs this IPL 2024 season. Kohli’s party eventually came to a conclusion at the halfway stage of the innings courtesy of a sharp catch from Daryl Mitchell at long-on off the bowling of Mitchell Santner.
RCB vs CSK Highlights: Captain Faf Picks Up Pace, Patidar Carries On With Green
Following the wicket of Virat Kohli, captain Faf du Plessis picked up the pace and notched up his fourth half-century in the process. The Proteas star scored 54 runs in all from 39 balls, until a sharp runout from Mitchell Santner at the non-striker’s accounted for his downfall at 113-2.
Rajat Patidar at number three carried on the momentum by launching four sixes in his 23-ball 41-run knock, and even shared 71 runs with Cameron Green from just 35 balls to take RCB near the 200-run mark.
RCB vs CSK Highlights: Cameos Galore As Green, Karthik, Maxwell Set RCB’s 218
Arriving to the crease at the start of the 14th over, Cameron Green still found time to smear 38 unbeaten runs from just 17 balls. Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell also unleashed identical cameos at the death until they were dismissed by Tushar Deshpande and Shardul Thakur respectively.
Green’s slog-overs belligerence, aided by three boundaries and three maximums, electrified RCB to a thunderous 218-5 at the end of their innings.
RCB vs CSK Highlights: Rachin Steadies CSK’s Ship Before RCB Regain Control
RCB’s spin trump card Glenn Maxwell got the better of CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad with a half-tracker off the first ball of the run-chase. Daryl Mitchell soon followed suite as he was holed out by Virat Kohli off Yash Dayal at 19-2 in 2.2 overs.
Chasing 219 runs to win and 201 to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, CSK opener Rachin Ravindra led his team’s faltering response with an outbreak of boundaries and sixes. The New Zealander shared a 66-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane (33 off 22) and another 30 runs with a struggling Shivam Dube (7 of 15) to take CSK past the 100-run mark.
However, Ravindra’s unfortunate mix-up led to sudden departures of Dube and Mitchell Santner as CSK slipped to 129-6 in 15 overs.
RCB vs CSK Highlights: RCB Hold Off Dhoni, Ravindra In Thriller
Forming forces at 129-6 with five overs to go, Ravindra Jadeja and captain MS Dhoni kept CSK’s qualification hopes alive until the latter was holed out by Swapnil Singh in the final over of the match.
Yash Dayal also held off Jadeja’s potential rampage as RCB secured a playoffs berth by nine runs and a win by 28 runs.
