IPL 2022 | ‘Sachin sir had a long chat with me after I had a bad game’ - Basil Thampi

Mumbai Indians have had a forgettable journey in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2022 as the five-time champions are reeling at the bottom-most position of the points table with nine defeats from eleven matches. They have fought hard in some matches, but their inability to hold their nerves during crunch situations has badly affected their on-field performance.

As speculated earlier, Mumbai’s bowling department has let them down in most matches this season. Basil Thampi, who MI bought in the mega auction, is among the bowlers who have underperformed for MI as the well-built pacer from Kerala has conceded 152 runs at an economy of 9.50 in the five games he has played in the tournament.

However, the 28-year-old seamer has revealed that he got the motivation he needed after having a bad day on the field as the great Sachin Tendulkar invited him to chat with him after the game’s completion.

In a video posted by MI’s official YouTube channel, Thampi said that the team doctor informed him that Sachin wanted to talk to him after the match. Later, he spent around forty minutes with the legendary Indian batter discussing almost every aspect of the game.

“I had a bad game, and I got a message from the doc (the doctor) that Sachin sir wants to meet me. I spent like forty minutes with him and we talked about cricket. We covered everything,” Thampi said.

Continuing, Thampi said that Zaheer Khan and Shane Bond also shared their words of wisdom regarding how they used to prepare for the matches and deal with the situation in case they had a bad day. He also said that both these legendary fast bowlers are friendly and easily approachable, which is undoubtedly a positive sign for a budding fast bowler like him.

“Zak (Zaheer) sir and Bondy (Bond) sir were talking about how they prepare for the game. How do they react to the situation? They were very, very friendly to talk to, and you know, whenever we have time, we can message them,” the seamer concluded.

This season, the most successful IPL franchise became the first team to get knocked out of the race for the playoffs.

CSK pacer Simarjeet Singh recalls snub from the U-19 Asia Cup squad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Simarjeet Singh has recently recalled his ordeal when he was dumped out of India's squad for U-19 Asia Cup at the last moment. In a video uploaded by the CSK's official Twitter handle, Simarjeet recalled how he was left disheartened and depressed when he got a call ahead of the U-19 Asia Cup about his snub. The Delhi pacer got omitted from the squad at the final moment because he had already featured in the previous edition of the same tournament. U-19 cricketers can't feature in successive editions of a particular multi-national tournament according to rules. Nevertheless, the development left the young seamer discouraged, and his parents did everything at the time to lift his morale. "There was this one time, I was selected to play for India in the Asia Cup at the Under-19 level. The team was about to depart for the Asia Cup. Just one day before our departure, I received a call telling me that I cannot go to the Asia Cup," "It's because of some strange rule that barred those who played at the Under-19 level the previous year from playing again this year. Since I played at the Under-19 level the previous year, the selector cancelled my selection," he revealed. "I was supposed to take a flight early the following morning and I got a call very late at night telling me that I was no longer a part of the team. This disheartened me but my parents tried to pacify me by telling me that I should be proud to have gotten where I have," Singh added. Singh has come a long way since that snub. The Super Kings picked the right-arm pacer at a base price of INR 20 Lakh in the recent mega-auction. He has featured in three games thus far and has claimed two wickets. Singh's best performance so far has come against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he finished with match-winning figures of 2/27 in four overs.

James Anderson in awe of Hasan Ali’s passion for the game

Legendary England seamer James Anderson has showered glowing praise on his Lancashire teammate and Pakistan seam-bowling all-rounder, Hasan Ali. Ali, one of the nine Pakistani cricketers to feature in the ongoing County Championship, has turned heads in the United Kingdom (UK) with his consistent, match-winning performances for Lancashire in Division I. Hasan is currently the leading wicket-taker in Division I and was recently adjudged the 'Player of the Month' for April by Lancashire. And, even Anderson is picking some tricks from the Pakistan international. Speaking to BBC 5 Radio Live, Anderson lauded Hasan for his love for the game and eagerness to learn new things. "Hasan Ali is an absolute legend, great guy and bowler. He's quite quick and he gives it everything, every ball. He's been amazing for Lancashire. He got Player of the Month for Lancashire in April and he's got skills. It's been great bowling with him. You can learn a lot from people you have not played with before when you see how they operate and see the different things they do. Although he's been asking me a lot of questions about what I do, I've also been watching him and have learned some stuff from him," "He just loves cricket and bowling. When you sign an overseas player, sometimes you're never quite sure if they're coming to get an experience of the conditions or the money. But he literally loves cricket, he will bowl all day long, he will never say no to the captain or say I am feeling tired or I need a rest," he added. Hasan's famous 'generator celebration' every time he takes a wicket has been on full show this summer. And even Anderson is impressed by how seamlessly the bowler transitions himself from being focused on the job to his 'routine' every time he claims a wicket. Anderson said: "I like his celebration, I am amazed he can be so focused on bowling and all of a sudden he gets a wicket and he's bang straight into the routine. He sort of bends his leg at the knees, his hands sort of touch the ground almost and then he pulls his hands back quickly, I can't really describe it. Whenever he has done in the past, he has done in front of big crowds, in county cricket, it's quite loud 'Hooo, heee, Hoooo," said Anderson. Thus far, Hasan has scalped 24 wickets for Lancashire in just four championship games. He has claimed them at an average of 18.50, and the pacer is currently leading the wicket-taking charts in the first division.
