IPL 2022 | MI vs PKBS | Post-match Analysis

We are a quarter way through in the 2022 edition of IPL and we witnessed quite an exciting number of thrilling games. And the game between the Punjab Kings and the Mumbai Indians was one of them. Let us analyze the team’s performances and later, we shall have a look at the most impactful player with the bat and ball.

Punjab Kings with the bat

Chart

Here we can see that one of the most impactful things in their innings was the aggressive start provided by their skipper, Agarwal who struck at a colossal 181 with regular boundaries and a lack of dots. While Dhawan, on the other end, was pacing his innings well.

They did jitter in the middle overs where they just scored around 7.4 runs per over at an average and lost 3 wickets but they kept the scoreboard ticking by scoring runs in between the wickets.

What they did in the death overs was superb, where they batted smartly against the inexperienced Mumbai death overs bowling lineup. While they respected Burmah and scored only 8 runs in his over, they scored the remaining 51 runs in 3 overs against Basil Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat and propelled Punjab to a handsome 198.

Mumbai’s Response with the bat

A very noticeable difference between the two teams is the start provided to Mumbai Indians’ top order where they have not only started on a slow basis but also ended up losing. They came back very well in the middle overs, thanks to a berserk over by Dewald Brevis against Rahul Chahar and the scoreboard kept ticking till the 16th over.

Once this spell ended, the next 4 overs contributed to only 36 runs with 5 dismissals of his phone and the accuracy of Punjab's bowlers was splendid and restricted their run-scoring rate.

Another major cause of concern for the Mumbai Indians is the lack of finishers in the team since the onus today was on pollard alone who couldn't deliver and this exposes the lower order during the critical stages of the innings.

Best Performers of the Match

We had multiple performers like Mayank Agarwal, Shikhar Dhawan, Jitesh Sharma, et al; but it all comes down to the impact created by the player on the team’s performance and innings. Based on the impact of the overall innings, the following players have been chosen for more in-depth analysis.

Mayank Agarwal’s 52

What made this innings really special was that while heading into this match, Mayank Agarwal was under pressure due to his underwhelming performances in the last couple of games and what stood out in this innings was his ability to score from ball number one without wasting much time and consuming dots. The following graph gives the line and length split.

Here we can see that Mayank has capitalized on those deliveries such as a half volley or a short length delivery outside off stump and at the same time, he has respected those lengths which are slightly more risky to play shots such as the good length outside off stump and the short length on the off stump.

By the time he got out to a fuller length delivery around the off stump region, the damage had already been done. He also struggled a bit with wide outside off stump yorkers but the execution of it wasn't continuous.

What also stood out in his innings was his very low false shot percentage of 18.75 per cent which shows that he was predominantly in control of his shots in the powerplay.

Dewald Brewis is gaining confidence and he is cementing his place as the next big star in the world of cricket. Brewis took his time initially and consumed 9 deliveries to get off the mark. But since then, there was no turning back and he went berserk against Rahul Chahar where he capitalized on the long hops (short ball) and also took him on against loopy deliveries (generally fuller length).

He respected the good length deliveries around the 4th stump line and mainly capitalized on the bad balls. Though he had a slightly high false shot percentage of 36 (9 Deliveries), 6 of these 9 deliveries were within his first 10 balls and then he got more settled and timed his shots to perfection.

On a more large scale view, we can see that Rabada has mixed up his line and lengths very well and occasionally bowled the slower ball. He has bowled only 1 yorker and that is because a few yorkers got converted into low full tosses which also resulted in the major wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. He also had a decent false shot percentage value of 34 and his impact in the game was as important as the one provided by Odean Smith with his 4 wicket haul.

These analytically driven stats give us a clear idea of where the teams stand and also give us an overall SWOT analysis. It also gives a good viewpoint for the fans to understand the differences involved before they dive deep into the live game.
