IPL 2022 | KL Rahul can play a finisher role for LSG in IPL, believes Gavaskar

India's batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul can be the best finisher in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Lavishing praise on KL Rahul, Gavaskar said he has all the attributes and clean cricketing shots in his armoury.

Stylish right-hand batter, KL Rahul, is currently opening the innings alongside Quinton De Kock. Even before joining LSG, he was the opening batter for the Punjab Kings as well.

However, the former India captain thinks otherwise of Rahul. According to Gavaskar, the LSG skipper has the potential to finish off the games.

While speaking on Star Sports, batting great Sunil Gavaskar said, "KL Rahul is such an integral part of any team. He opens the batting and gets to bat 20 overs, and sets the pace for his team. I believe he has the ability to be the finisher as well.

The former skipper also praised his ability to hit cracking big sixes across all corners of the ground in the death overs.

"He's not just somebody who can begin the innings and get the team off to a good start. He has all the shots in the book to finish it off as well. So if he gets going till the 15th-16th over, then LSG can post 200-plus on the board, Gavaskar added.

The 72-year old former cricketer is not completely wrong in his assessment. Because there was one instant when Rahul smashed his maiden T20I century against the West Indies in 2016, batting in the middle-order, notably, he bats at number 4 for India in the ODI format.

The Karnataka batter has batted in the middle order in the previous seasons of IPL as well. He used to bat at number 4 or 5 during his time with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, he has been opening since his departure to Punjab.

We're building a team around him as a captain - McDonald on Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch has been going through a rough phase, but Australia's interim coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Finch is leading the side in the T20 World Cup later this year on home soil. Since October of the last T20 World Cup in the UAE, Finch has played 12 T20Is and three ODIs without scoring a half-century. His average in those matches are 15.73, with a strike rate of just 97.92. McDonald still thinks, "From my end, there's no conversation around the fact that he won't be there." But, he added, "His form can ebb and flow as most players can, and his ability to work through these patches have been significant in his career. We had the same conversation about David Warner leading into the T20 World Cup last time." He further explained that Australia is building a T20I team with Finch as a captain for the World Cup. "All these conversations are going to happen. Do we think he's still good enough to play at this level? 100% and I think that's as simple as it gets for us. We're building a team around him as a captain. It's a pretty significant pillar to discuss not being at the T20 World Cup. We think he can still play at this level from our end." Finch's poor form continued in the recently concluded ODI series against Pakistan. In the last 15 limited-overs innings, he has nine single-digit scores, including two back-to-back ducks in the previous two One Day Internationals against Pakistan. "He's disappointed with his current form; there's no doubt about that," McDonald said. Finch will soon join Kolkata Knight Riders for his IPL assignment after the one-off T20I against Pakistan on Tuesday.
